I have discovered the cause of the problem though. Turns out that NCrunch carries along with it a copy of Gallio - and this copy of Gallio must be conflicting with the Gallio plugin for Resharper.
If I uninstall the Gallio test runner plugin, everything works fine. The Gallio test runner I'm using is from a recent nightly build - the first Gallio build (version 3.3.456.0) to support R# 6.

So there are two things really:
1) there is a conflict somewhere between NCrunch and the R# plugin "Gallio test runner". The conflict is almost certainly between the two versions of Gallio.
2) R# isn't handling this conflict very well - there is no message or error indication apart from when you try to actually use R# - when all the behavior is borked and it doesn't think there is a solution loaded.

I have removed the Gallio test runner plugin for R# and everything is working fine - including R# and NCrunch.

My suggested steps to repro:
VS 2010 SP1
NCrunch_VS2010_1.35.16b
ReSharper 6.0 C# Edition Build 6.0.2202.688 Resharper plugin: Gallio.ReSharperRunner60.dll (zip file attached)
